September, 2009

September, 2009
from the desk of Barry Kirschner, Executive Director

As September comes to a close let’s remember it is both Childhood Cancer Awareness Month as well as Sickle Cell Awareness Month. Throughout our seven Valerie Fund Children’s Centers almost 5,000 children will be treated annually. The majority of these kids will be fighting some form of cancer or sickle cell disease. At this summer’s Sickle Cell Awareness Blood Drive at Seton Hall University we brought more attention to this painful disease that affects our children in New Jersey and New York. Beyond simply spreading the word, we also succeeded in getting over 60 new blood donations from donors of Africian descent that will help our children who constantly need transfusions with the closest possible match. Please consider donating blood as it directly helps our children.

I’m honored to announce that The Valerie Fund CINJ /LITE Program is up and running at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick. This joint effort provides late effects screening for children and young adults who are two years or more off treatment. It is an essential exam to diagnose any late or lingering effects from pediatric cancer treatments. If you would like to schedule an appointment, call the LITE Clinic directly at 732-235-5437 or call us in The Valerie Fund office.

As 2009 begins to wind down, we need your help to continue supporting these programs. Go now to donate at www.thevaleriefund.org or simply call 973-761-0422.

We need you more than ever because it is remains all about the kids!
