June 2009 - Amazing! That’s the only way to describe the turnout at our Valerie Fund Walk & 5K Run last week. To see over 1600 walkers and 500 runners show up in support of all the children that come through our seven Valerie Fund Centers proves the difference we can all make. Doctors, nurses, social workers and child life specialists walked with patients and their supporters from all over the state. What began as one walk in Verona sparked a second one, initiated by a grateful patient from 18 years ago in Long Branch. It gives me great pride to know that children who need us are going to get the medical and emotional care that they need. In Verona, young Gabriel wore a sandwich board that said, “I Will Not Give Up!” Neither will we. And neither should you. This is the same message we will carry forward to our hundreds of children fighting sickle cell disease, many of whom need blood transfusions. We want to encourage those of you who represent the great ethnic diversity in our area to come out to Seton Hall University on July 25th for RED IS THE NEW BLACK: The Valerie Fund Sickle Cell Awareness Blood Drive. The kids need your blood! Please join our Sickle Cell Leadership Council, James Ihedigbo who plays for the New York Jets and many others who will come out to donate a pint of blood (it doesn’t hurt!) that can literally save the life of a child with sickle cell disease.
