Logan's Heroes

This year's update:
October 5, 2023 marked 6 YEARS since Logan's stem cell transplant! He is thriving academically and thankfully able to take part in so many sports that we once weren't sure would be safe for him. This past year he has played soccer, baseball, basketball, ran track, went to his first sport summer camp, and he is working towards his orange belt in Taekwondo. It is because of the continued care, support, and dedication of the staff at the TVF that Logan is able to do all that he does.

Logan's story...
Our small and mighty Logan was born on 1/31/17 (4.3 lbs, 31 weeks) at Morristown Memorial. Immediately after he was born, we learned that Logan had Pancytopenia—a condition in which his body had very low red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Basically, his bone marrow was not working to produce any new cells. The NICU, genetic, and hematology departments at Morristown Memorial and CHOP ran a litany of tests to try to uncover the underlying cause of Logan’s bone marrow failure but it was undetermined. In order to save his life, he needed 60+ blood and platelet transfusions immediately after birth up until he was 8 months old. Logan stayed in the NICU for 2 months until he was stable and recovered from a preemie standpoint. Following Logan’s discharge from the NICU, we brought him into the Valerie Fund Center two times a week to check his counts and for him to get necessary transfusions. As new parents, we were beyond nervous to bring Logan home considering his health issues and the uncertainty of his blood counts. We would not have been able to make this next step without the endless support and compassion from Dr. Gregory and the entire team at the Valerie Fund Center. They have truly become an extension of our family. On October 5th, 2017 our brave and unstoppable boy received a bone marrow transplant at CHOP. The stem cells that saved Logan's life came from a beautiful and selfless woman named Sheryl, who we are now closely connected to. Through every step of our unexpected journey, The Valerie Fund Center has been there for us when and how ever we need them.
