Remembering not what cancer takes from us, but what we can take from cancer.

Hi Everyone! 18 years ago, only weeks shy of my 15th birthday, I was rushed to the ER where doctors found an 9 by 12 inch tumor in my chest and said the three words you can never really prepare yourself for - "you have cancer." It was in that minute that my life indelibly changed, and I began my journey to survive with the help of family, friends and the amazing doctors and team at The Valerie Fund. For two years, I underwent chemotherapy treatments while being home schooled and ultimately had to give up my love of playing sports due to a bone disease caused by my treatments. While I had to sacrifice a large part of my high school career, I remained determined to not let cancer define who I was. I stayed involved in school activities such as student council and our school paper, but also felt compelled to give back to The Valerie Fund as they had already done so much to support me. I began helping in any way I could to increase awareness for pediatric cancer by speaking at schools, events, and more - and along with the help of friends and family, raised over $100k for TVF. After 2 years of chemo, 2 hip replacements and 2 shoulder replacements, I am thrilled to say that I graduated from NYU and now live in New York City where I work in public relations for organizations such as Stand Up To Cancer. In this last year, I have celebrated new milestones -- I married the love of my life with my family by my side and am looking forward to all that is still to come. I proudly say today that while I may have had cancer, cancer never had me. A million thanks to everyone that has continued to support TEAM MEGHAN over the years.
