September is Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month
September is Childhood Cancer and Sickle Cell Awareness Month, a designation promoted across the United States and the red and yellow ribbon is a powerful symbol of advocacy and awareness.
Fundraisers held in September hope to take advantage of the trend towards giving back during a time of public recognition. Here in New Jersey, two community events on the calendar in September support the children of The Valerie Fund in a very meaningful way.
PIER VILLAGE BIRTHDAY PARTY
Pier Village in Long Branch, NJ hosted a "birthday party" on Sunday, September 17th, 2017 to support The Valerie Fund's 40th anniversary. Entertainment included New Jersey 101.5, who broadcasted live from the beach, inflatable amusement rides, face painting, and live performances by Lakehouse Music Academy students. The beautiful sunny day brought out many Pier Village residents and their dogs. Two Valerie Fund patients, Danielle and Norma, were there to enjoy the day with their families. And their courage was acknowledged by Bunny Flanders, Director of Marketing and Communications, during her remarks.
Nicole Kushner Meyer, of Kushner Companies, said, "We are thrilled to help The Valerie Fund celebrate its 40th birthday. The incredible compassion and support this organization gives to families in need is an immense source of local pride, and we look forward to The Valerie Fund's next 40 years of unparalleled work." The event raised over $4,000.
KATIE'S KREW COLOR RUN
The money raised at the upcoming event, Katie's Krew 1st Annual Color Run has been pledged to the 2017 Valerie Fund Walk & JAG Physical Therapy 5K Run. Walk team, Katie's Krew, led by Jennifer Mulcahy has already raised over $25,000 during their participation in the annual June fundraiser.
"The girls [Katie and Grace] and I wanted to do something special for The Valerie Fund's 40 year anniversary and wanted to host an event for the entire family. Katie & Grace really wanted to have a local event for their family, friends, classmates, and teammates."
The Color Run will be on Sunday, September 24th in Bayonne, NJ. Entertainment will include a DJ, refreshments, face painters and food trucks. For more information please visit https://www.thevaleriefund.org/color-run/.
These two events will raise thousands of dollars and will make a significant difference in the lives of children with cancer and blood disorders and their families. Revenue for our community events has tripled in the last five years. We salute the supporters of The Valerie Fund who lead events from bake sales to basketball tournaments, fun runs to fashions—all year round.
